Having been writing for a little while and that’s because handling a new born takes up alot of time but hopefully in the near future this blog can be expanded to cover more diverse topics. We’ll see. Got an interesting email from S.Varshne below and we’re going to try to answer it. I do take our reader’s comments very seriously and a large percent of them gets replied. Oracle DRM continues to be one of the best Data Governance tool for Financial MDM out there in my opinion and no doubt tracking changes is important to the piece of the puzzle. There’re two different ways of tracking changes.

1. the native DRM log – this provides very detail for every action for every node

2. the less detailed DRM properties tracking the date/time of the most recent changes.

Let’s review the questions…

I tried what you suggested here in baby steps
- First enabled TrackChanges System preference
- Created a property called NodeChangedFlag (You mention in your article that I can pick and choose the preferences I want to use. So I leave out the rest)
- Updated the System preference NodeChangedProperty to point to NodeChangedFlag

Here are the error messages I see…

Oh yes I know, how can anyone find anything called DRM on the web? Digital Rights Management, Digital Restrictions Management, Data Reference Model, Data Resources Manager, Data Relationship Management. I hear you, maybe marketing can come up with a better name.

Master Data Management is much more than a silo technology solution, it requires an ecosystem of technologies and processes to make it work. For example, we used to have hierarchies stored in Oracle 11i ERP and another set sitting inside Essbase cubes, that won’t work very well. The key is to make the relevant systems work together.

SOA is a good question. Everyone is talking about it but my take is that SOA is still a buzz word. The service piece is often undefined. It’s one thing to talk about making RSS feed out of XML through a database and calling it a web service. It’s another defining real business processes that interacts between human and technology. It involves workflow, SOA and other glues. Fortunately, the glues are slowly maturing though there’s still alot being done in the custom, than the pre-build world. A real example is also quite a few MDM solution preaches SOA, they rarely provide a ready-to-go solution to work with the target system. You ended up having more system integrators working for the problem.
