Oracle DRM Blog

In our quest to build a financial hierarchy, in the last blog entry, we taught you how to prepare a Parent-Child hierarchy and then using the Parent-Child Import Automator tool, we created the necessary DRM Automator script without even trying. This literally saves days of work. Imagine if you’re trying to develop 10 hierarchies (with 1,000 members each)  in DRM as an example, you could literally accomplish all of it with the aid of this tool (end-to-end)  in less than an hour (or two). If not, each hierarchy could take you a day to do. That’s a big difference.

DRM Automate Financial Hierarchy Load

Anyway, let’s move on and load the Automator script we created into Oracle Hyperion Data Relationship Management.

Apologize that I have been quite busy for the last few weeks. But thank you for all the support. I have getting pinged to provide some help in using the DRM Tools that I posted a while back. In addition, I am getting some great questions and solving them as soon as they come in. We’re on fire!!! Keep them coming, guys.

And with the latest ping from Ming, I decided to move on and continue this series of blogs aimed to demonstrate how you could be using Oracle Data Relationship Management in building out your hierarchies in minutes and not days — yes literally!

Back in August, I blogged about a tool that I have created on my own which helped me tremendously in developing hierarchies for a long time. The tool started out as a script that I used very often that I decided to make it web-based and generic enough for you to use. Once you start using it to build your 1st hierarchy, you’ll realize the power. Let’s start the tutorial…

One of the little known secret in the Oracle DRM 9.3.2 and after, as I have outlined in one of the previous post, is the migration utility. Sure you can understand from the name what this utility does, but today I am going to cover something it’s also good for – documenting what you did inside of DRM, especially with those several hundred properties that you’ve created.

After you bought Oracle Hyperion DRM, and used it to consolidate several of your silo hierarchies from a number of systems, you’re likely to have the need to start documenting them. One reason is for ease of administration. If you’re like me, created a lot of Properties inside of DRM for the purpose of storing information, and generating the necessary output, then these are good candidates for documentation for now and the future.

One of the biggest pet peeve I have before version 9.3.2, is that if I have these masses of Properties, I’d have no choice but to do cut and paste from the DRM Client into an Excel spreadsheet or Word. Besides the pain of going back and forth doing copy-n-paste with this method, you’re also likely to make mistakes. Of course, the biggest factor is that it’ll take alot of hours.

Good news, I have something really cool for you Essbase lovers in building your existing hierarchy into Oracle DRM, almost seamlessly. Many of us look to Oracle DRM to provide a facility to load our parent-child text file and import a hierarchy. Well it just doesn’t work that way. Oracle DRM has it’s own flat file format that’s not very common…I mean HFM or BPMA maybe the closest but still if you are working on a project and you have a simple CSV file, you’re out of luck. Be prepare for hours of programming or manual tweaking the file before it can be imported into Oracle DRM. Well now, here is a cool solution.

For several years, I have opted to do my own gardening. Well it’s not much of gardening at all if you imagine that I just do the lawn mowing and cleaning weeds. I get my enjoyment doing it because of several reasons. First, it’s a form of exercise. Second, it’s a way to get a break from work once in a while. Third, I enjoy being with nature. In reality, I am lousy at it. I spend most of my time zooming through the lawn like a crazed man. I wanted to finish the chore in the shortest amount of time, because deep inside, I think I rather do development than mowing the lawn, as much as I think I enjoy this. Usually it’s 30 minutes before we have to go somewhere. My wife usually complains when I left the lawn un-mowed for 2 weeks, for all the grasses sticking out, or it’d be about those weeds in the back. The weeds in the back are usually left unattended because it’s not an eye-sore when no one sees it from the curb. However, it’s there and we know it. The truth is, that’s no way to make the garden proud. I know the potential of what it could have been. I simply don’t have the time as most of us would complained. The fact is, I realized just because I want to do it myself does not make me the best person to do it. And with that fact, we hired a Mexican friend to do the maintenance for me.

Perl Gem

Have you ever walk across a junkyard, maybe it’s for cars, maybe it’s just a dump…probably not huh…and you pick up a thing or two. Heaven forbid you land on a Picasso or something, wouldn’t that be great? Come a little closer to life, maybe you’re a BMW enthusiast, and you walk in a showroom with the latest BMW gears, how are you gonna feel? Not too bad I hope. Well that kind of experience happened to me today as I browse through the web and came across a block of code.

The Hyperion Data Relationship Management, Fusion Edition Release 11.1.1 has now been released to the public, along with all the other Hyperion apps. One first glance, the name has gone even longer and the release version has gone up a bit more than a notch. Personally, I think it’s kind of funny that:

  1. they skipped on version 10. Just like Hyperion skipped on System 8??? Maybe even numbers are not marketing friendly;
  2. they release it under a dot release 11.1.1 as oppose to 11.0. Historically, some customers know not to touch a product when it’s on a “.0″ dot zero release, and wait for a later release. Maybe that’s why some of us can be really confused thinking the product is actually been patched a few times already; or stupid enough to think there were a “.0″ dot zero release. Of course I heard that Oracle wants to line up this release with the rest of the “11″ products but I am skeptical. OK…now here’s a run down…

Designing User Interface

Posted by: Daniel In: Tips 'n' Tricks

Application development has now becoming more and more complex than ever. In the old days, it’s one person hacking away. After months of effort you get yourself a lovely app. Maybe it has something to do with music, TV, movies or maybe do your taxes. Now-a-days these developments are done by teams of people. So even if you want to do everything, it’s always better to have team to do it because they get it, they’re committed and they really want to go off and do their next generation Turbo Tax project. If you happen to be the GUI / User Interface design guy, then this tip is for you.

Random Q&A

Posted by: Daniel In: Master Data Management

I have been busy on several projects and will be doing some catch up on blogging really soon. Having said that, the DRM tools section on this web site had been upgraded. I can’t tell you how many hours I have saved using this over the past few weeks. So just to let you know, it’s not there to look pretty. I actually use it.

Some interesting design questions I got over the past few weeks…

Metalink 3 Knowledgebase

After some hiccups (but nothing can’t be fixed with a phone call), my Metalink account has been setup. And so I browsed through the knowledgebase to see how much stuff is in here.

  • Daniel: Ravi, yes there're a couple of properties needed for Essbase. If you are using v11 DRM, you should have the templates available already. Just check it
  • Daniel: Hi Tonia, use 9.3.1 add-in and it'll work fine unless you absolutely need version 11 features. In that case, we maybe able to help offline. Regards,
  • Daniel: There isn't any documentation as such from version 8. The DRM database structure is very different, you will have to rebuild it. Shouldn't be too hard
