Automate a Parent-Child hierarchy build – Part 3

Posted by: Daniel In: Oracle Data Relationship Management

In our quest to build a financial hierarchy, in the last blog entry, we taught you how to prepare a Parent-Child hierarchy and then using the Parent-Child Import Automator tool, we created the necessary DRM Automator script without even trying. This literally saves days of work. Imagine if you’re trying to develop 10 hierarchies (with 1,000 members each)  in DRM as an example, you could literally accomplish all of it with the aid of this tool (end-to-end)  in less than an hour (or two). If not, each hierarchy could take you a day to do. That’s a big difference.

DRM Automate Financial Hierarchy Load

Anyway, let’s move on and load the Automator script we created into Oracle Hyperion Data Relationship Management.

1. Open the Oracle DRM Client. Right click and select New | Version. We need to start with creating a new version. A version is a collection of hierarchies. By creating a version, you can add multiple hierarchies and start managing them.

Build Hierarchy in DRM

2. Let’s enter the same version name as when we used the Parent-Child Import Automator (e.g. FY08-AUG).

DRM Load Hierarchy

3. Next select File | Automator. Click the “Options…” button and change the delimiter to Other and type the pipe character ‘|‘. Click OK to confirm. Next, select the Automator file that we saved earlier and click the Load button.

4. Once the Automator file is loaded into memory you will be notified.

DRM Load Hierarchy

5. If you have loaded the file properly you will see the Automator elements populated into columns. Otherwise, you’ll get an error. In that case, go back and click the “Options…” button and fix the delimiter, or select the right file.

DRM Automate Load Hierarchy

6. Next click the “Process” button at the bottom. DRM will start processing the Automator script one lineat a time until it’s done. When finished you’ll be prompted. However, remember to scroll across to the 7th column to take note of the Status and ensure that you get Success on all the rows.

DRM Automator Build Hierarchy

7. Once you’re done and you’re gettig Success on all the rows, you can close the dialog box and then click Edit | Refresh All. Now, you can double click on the newly created hierarchy and you’ll notice all the nodes have been created.

DRM Automator Success

Well that’s it. You have created the hierarchy using Automator. You can repeat this process to create multiple hierarchies in DRM. It’s that easy.

In our next blog, we’ll explore how to load all the relevant properties using the same file. In other words, a simple text file can create both the hierarchy and populate all the relevant node attributes using the Automator tool.

Hi danie,

You are doing a great job.
Do you know if there is a easy way to export the hierarchies from MDM 8.0.0 to DRM 9.3.2 without upgrading the repository.

Thanks
Ravi

Hi Ravi,

Hyperion changed the tables quite alot in version 9 to make things work faster and to support newer features. As a result, you can only upgrade without reinstalling the tables from version 9.x onwards. Since your MDM database is version 8.0.0, you’re out of luck. The way I’d do this is to export the master data and its properties and re-import them onto a new instance. That’s the only option I think.

Hi Ravi, you will be using Export in MDM to get the hierarchy out and then use the native functionality of Essbase and HFM to import it back. If you need more help please contact me.

Ravi, yes there’re a couple of properties needed for Essbase. If you are using v11 DRM, you should have the templates available already. Just check it out.

Even if we will use property other than defailt description it will show the same problem, we need to change the system preference max length property from 80 to 250 then it will allow.
